What would openstreetmaps.org for Mars look like?

Openstreetmaps.org allows regular people to help build a map of every place on earth. It is a big editing toolbox that allows you to position roads, paths, buildings, and landmarks. If the same type of tool was available for Mars, what types of features would one place on Mars? Would it be for scientific purposes? Would it be for creating hypothetical cities on Mars? Or would it be a little of both?

If something like this does not already exist, would this make a good space mission activation process proposal, or does it lack a certain novelty which other proposals contain?

Peter, I think this is a great idea -- thanks for sharing. My view is that the SMAP should be reserved for real space missions, and we need another process (a simpler one) for projects that do not involve space mission design.

For this proposal, it fits under the development category since it is highley dependent on software developers, product managers, and designers which is quite a different skillset than aerospace engineers and the like.

I think you should bring this up in the SD-Development channel. The team is trying to hold regular weekly meetings as well. But as mentioned, for these projects to take force, we'd need to grow our community of software-focused people.

I would certainly use it for creating hypothetical cities. But I have no idea how to use this tool for Mars because people have never been there. Of course, one may state that uncrewed missions give us enough information about this planet. I don't think the existing info is enough to make a plan for the Mars colony. But it's just my opinion and nothing more.
