Hello everybody, I would like to talk a little bit about the MELISSA project, is everyboy familiar with it ?

Thomas,
I am glad you posted this invitation to discuss MELISSA. Yes, I am familiar with it.
MELISSA is a toolset that ESA created to design and analyze Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS). Now it appears that some users have found ways to use MELISSA to model Controlled Ecological Life Support Systems (CELSS) and Bioregenerative Life Support Systems (BLSS).
NASA developed a comparable tool called ALSSAT(Advanced Life Support System Analysis Tool). It does much of what MELISSA does, plus Crew Systems Division at JSC has published the results of many of their analyses over the past two decades. One key difference between ALSSAT and MELISSA appears to be that there are people using Melissa to try to model better environmental or agricultural systems for use on Earth, but I am not aware of anyone using ALSSAT to do that. However, I can ask the folks at JSC if they are aware of comparable work with ALSSAT. Meanwhile, I will take my collection of ALSSAT reports and post them on Space Decentral, although I am not sure that Spaceship Earth is the best place since all those studies address life support in space.
Another apporach to which I can refer you is the Water Walls project, which proposed to use forward osmosis membranes plus algae and cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) to perform life support functions. Those papers are available on the Spacearchitect.org bibliography page. The Water Walls Project is in hiatus, but I am hoping to reactivate it in the next year.

Thank you so much Marc for once again a great answer, do you know if we plan on implementing that method and results to our porposed missions ? Also will you be present at the IAC 2018 in germany ? See you soon
